We want to support children to name their feelings, so we can respond to the behaviours. This helps children regulate their bodies. 

Part of naming the feeling, is asking questions to get children to think about what happened, what is going on and what might they be feeling. Then reflecting back understanding. 

When we ask questions that communicate nurture, care, and connection, the child will use their upstairs brain to think about what you have said. When a child uses their upstairs brain and explains what has happened, there upstairs brain can then support their downstairs brain with the big emotions to regulate again.
