Working Full Time and Trying to Run a Small Business on the Side

Six things I've learnt in the last year working full time and trying to run a small business on the side
  1. It can feel pretty overwhelming. The pressure to be advertising, marketing the website, and resources can feel like a lot. Especially when they aren’t your strengths. It’s been crazy to see myself build a website and try different things I never would have before. But it can feel like a lot. Regularly, the last thing I want to do after finishing work is post things on Facebook. I’m going through a bit of a funk with Instagram and Facebook, and instead focusing on TikTok which I think can capture the resources, my story and life in a much better way. So, find what works best for you, your story and business.
  2. I love being able to have endless possibilities, like there aren’t that many boundaries with a small business. It feels pretty limitless, and you can take risks and try new things without the same amount of pressure or fear because you still have your full time work.
  3. When I go through a funk, I have decided it's better to focus on what I think is fun, it makes sure the joy is still in the business. Like, that was the purpose of this. To have fun, learn new things and share resources that I make and use with families. So, I encourage you to find your fun and joy, whatever that is in your specific business, and hold onto that until you are out of the funk.
  4. It can feel like you aren’t doing much in the small business, and sometimes it does get put to the wayside, because my full time job is my priority. This is my side fun project. So, if you're like me, and can’t be doing all these amazing things every day like posting about your product or small business, because you're exhausted and have other life commitments, I think we have to be ok with that. We will get to it, when we get to it.
  5. I love the creative outlet, this business has supported me to really spread my wings, and be creative in a way I didn’t even know I could be. It’s the best! I love writing out lists of ideas, and slowly working through making them. A small business can be a creative outlet.
  6. I love sharing new things I learn about and new tools I’ve made to support families navigating conversations and empowering parents to share their life skills with their children. This space to run a business, is a learning environment and encourages me as a learner to keep exploring, researching and learning, as well as opens opportunities to share learnings along the way with others.

Hope this helps!
